How to Publish

Assoc Prof Crosling said publishing was also about communication.

Publishing one’s work in respected journals is a must for an academic worth his or her salt, but remains a daunting task for many.

At the Seminar on Academic Publishing, participants had some fears alleviated when they gained tips and insights into selecting appropriate journals to publish their works and develop a critical understanding on how to prepare manuscripts.

The one-day seminar was jointly organised by the Library and Learning Commons of Monash University Sunway campus and the Tun Hussein Onn Library of the Sunway Education Group.

“Publishing is about knowledge, and knowledge evolves and develops. As you go about your research work and publish your findings, you develop new ideas and even break new ground,” Associate Professor Dr Glenda Crosling told participants before opening the event.

But publishing, she stressed, was also about communication.

“Keep in mind what your goal is and push through those barriers. It will help you find a way to produce a publishable piece of work,” said Assoc Prof Crosling, who is Director of Education Quality and Innovation at the Sunway campus.

Assoc Prof Crosling is herself an author and editor of several books, including the co-author of “How to Study Business Law”, a book now in its fourth edition since its initial publication in 1994, and widely recommended for law and business law students in Australia and internationally.

The seminar received overwhelming response with a total of 140 in attendance compared to an initial target of 80.

Assoc Prof Crosling said this showed that the event was addressing a need among academics.

It was especially pleasing, she added, that many had taken a proactive approach to learn and better themselves.

Speakers at the event included senior representatives of publishing houses.
