Pharmacy students at Monash University Sunway campus will now have the opportunity to practice their clinical skills at government hospitals and government community polyclinics.

Under a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) recently inked with the Ministry of Health recently, Monash University Sunway campus students will also have the opportunity to train under registered pharmacists at these health centres.

Among the 17 hospitals that will be utilised for the teaching and training of Monash University Sunway campus pharmacy students include the Kuala Lumpur General Hospital, Putrajaya Hospital, University of Malaya Medical Centre, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre, Ampang Hospital, Selayang Hospital, Sungai Buloh Hospital and Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Baru where the campus’ Clinical School Johor Baru is also located.

The four-year Bachelor of Pharmacy taught at the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences currently incorporates work placement programs that train future pharmacists to understand provision of primary health care, drug information, and clinical pharmacy services in different environments.

The program offered at Monash University Sunway campus is identical to that of Monash University in Australia but with some flexibility for contextualisation to the Malaysian healthcare system – a necessary feature for pharmacists graduating in Malaysia. Master of science programs in clinical pharmacy and health economics are also in the pipeline.

A total of seven polyclinics have also been identified. Among them are the Bangsar Community Polyclinic, Kelana Jaya Community Polyclinic, Jeram Community Polyclinic and the Tanglin Community Polyclinic.

Under the agreement, Monash University Sunway campus will provide additional training for government hospital and community polyclinics in the area of pharmaceutical care.
