At the recent Maxis Scholarship for Excellence Awards, Monash students did the Sunway campus proud by clinching seven of 21 scholarships on offer – the most from a single university.
The seven were:
- School of Business: Jeanette Siah Ying Zhen
- School of Science: Chen Su-Yi, Bachelor of Science (Medical Bioscience);
- Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences: Daniel Nor Izham, Ishreen Kaur Dhillon and Ng Shu Hui – Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS); Louis Yap Jun Hao – Bachelor of Psychological Science and Business

The Maxis Scholarship for Excellence Awards is part of Maxis’ education-related initiatives that support exceptional talent. The seven were chosen from over 1,000 applications.
Siah found that the selection phase was very rigorous.
“The application process itself required all our academic results and a 200-words purpose statement of our vision, after which we were shortlisted to attend interviews before the final 21 were selected,” the straight-A student said.
Her winning vision was “to drive financial success in companies through sound business strategies.”
Another straight-A student, Ishreen, was thrilled to receive the award and said that the scholarship was a great reward for the hard work that she has been putting in to achieve her ambition of being a doctor.

Lee said that the scholarship has motivated him to see further into his future.
“This scholarship has inspired me to work even harder and to one day extend my career in Malaysia as my way of giving back to the people of this country.”
Speaking from a prepared text, Deputy Minister of Higher Education 1 YB Dato’ Dr Hou Kok Chung said that the Maxis Scholarship for Excellence program would help young people reach their true potential with a vision for a diverse Malaysian talent pool that would drive the national vision.

Since its inception in 2005, Maxis has awarded 78 undergraduate scholarships to students in public and private universities, both locally and abroad.
In his speech, Maxis Chairman Raja Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Arshad bin Raja Tun Uda said that the company’s scholarships were not limited to fields related to communications technology alone as Maxis understood that communications cut through industries.
“We are also pleased to be directly enriching the lives of our customers and employees by offering them and their children merit-based scholarships,” he said.
