The students and staff at Monash University Sunway campus know how to celebrate festivities in style, even amidst the tight schedules and assignment deadlines.
For the big community of Sri Lankan students who did not want to miss out on the celebrations back home, they put together a lavish celebration of the Sri Lankan New Year or Sinhala at the Sunway campus.
Students and staff congregated at the beautifully adorned concourse area, dressed in their best traditional attire, where they feasted on Sri Lankan delicacies and enjoyed various culturalperformances.
There are 228 Sri Lankan students who are currently pursuing their studies at the Sunway campus.
The smaller Sikh community also rang in their festival, the Vaisakhi, or Harvest Festival, with lively music from live drum and dance performances, as well as an informative slide show of the history of the festival for their guests.
“This is the first time that the Sikh staff and students are celebrating Vaisakhi on campus, together with all our other staff and students,” Senior Lecturer and organising committee member of the Vaisakhi celebration, Dr Hardip Kaur Pretam Singh Dhillon said.
Pro Vice-Chancellor and President (Malaysia) Prof Robin Pollard said he felt privileged to be at both festivals.
“One of the things that we are doing at this campus, is to include all cultures in our celebrations,” he said after the Vaisakhi celebration.
“It’s wonderful to see our students from all over the world taking part in cultural festivities. We are essentially celebrating our diversity and this is something that very few other universities can enjoy,” Prof Pollard added.
