A video co-produced by Monash University Sunway campus has been picked for screening at the International Film and Multimedia Festival to be held in conjunction with the 19th World Congress on Safety and Health at Work in Istanbul, Turkey.

The nine-minute video, titled “Dah Nak Sampai”, or “Almost Here”, was chosen by the Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) for submission.

Sunway campus’ Occupational Safety and Health Manager Mr Pramekumar Nair explained that the video centred on commuting accidents.

“In the past two years, there has been a high rate of commuting accidents during work hours. SOCSO wanted to promote awareness on its program to reduce commuting accidents, hence, this video was made,” he explained.

The video was a joint effort by SOCSO, the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (Selangor Branch), Monash University Accident Research Centre, the Sunway campus’ Occupational Health, Safety, Environment and Security Department, and School of Arts and Social Sciences (SASS).

Mr Prame also credited the selection to the late SASS lecturer Benjamin McKay, who had advised that the film carry a narrative theme rather than an instructional one as was prevalent in most safety videos.

“I believe this is the main reason the video was chosen,” said Prame.

The congress, organised by the International Social Security Association, will be held from September 11 to 15. The video will be screened at its closing ceremony on September 14. A panel will select the winning video.

Mr Prame said that two other videos have been produced: one on slips, trips and falls at the workplace, and the other on long-term effects of chemical exposure.
