The Scarlet Omen, penned by Sunway campus alumnus Cinthia Koeksal, is a planned trilogy.

Growing up, Cinthia Koeksal found her escape from everyday life in the form of the written word.

Often with her nose buried in a book and her head dreaming up imaginary worlds, the School of Business alumnus found her calling when she combined the two – resulting in the first of a planned trilogy, The Scarlet Omen.

“I’ve always liked making up things and living in my own world. I also can’t live without a good book in my hands so I thought, ‘What better way to spend my time than to combine the two things I love most: reading and make believe’.”

Cinthia, 32, graduated with a Bachelor of Business and Commerce (Marketing and Management) from Monash University Sunway Campus in 2003. Born and raised in Malaysia, the Pahang-born alumnus now lives in Germany, working as a Business English Trainer.

The Scarlet Omen is a piece of young adult fiction which portrays the symbiotic relationship between Western advancements and Eastern superstitions. The writer weaves a tale of humour, unconditional love and hair-raising magic between worlds accompanied where characters include a band of witches, vampires, dragons and fairies.

“I wrote The Scarlet Omen because I think that Malaysia is a country overflowing with extraordinary beauty, hair-raising myth and harmonious cultural diversity. Isn’t that worth writing about and sharing with the world?”

The story centres around Anjeli Xavier, a rebellious Malaysian teenager plagued by visions of bloodlust, translucent spirits and Bornean pygmies in Sarawak. With an over-protective Indian mother, Anjeli struggles to maintain her sanity as she discovers that her destiny was prophesied 300 years ago.

“Anjeli, my protagonist, is your everyday Malaysian teenage girl living under the strict rules of her Asian mother (which all of us had to put up with as kids) with the exception that she is constantly plagued by visions and blood soaked omens. The story is about fulfilling one’s destiny and believing that everything happens for a reason, which is basically my main motto in life,” Cinthia explains of the 234-page novel.

The Scarlet Omen was published by Parker Publishing Inc on June 17 and made it among the Top 10 English books on Amazon Germany.

The Scarlet Omen is available on Amazon.com, Barnes&Noble.com and www.parker-publishing.com
