Successfully completing your PhD in IT

 More than 60 participants from various higher learning institutions took part in a recent workshop organized by Monash University on successfully completing PhD studies in Information Technology.

Titled ‘Investing in your Future: A Workshop on Successful PhD Studies in IT’, the workshop was aimed at providing basic information and advice to participants intending to pursue research degrees in IT.

One of the major areas canvassed was the personal development issues that need to be managed in order to undertake a PhD degree successfully, especially in IT.

The speakers also shared tips on managing the research and writing processes, working effectively with supervisors and the different research areas available for PhD studies in the field of Information Technology.

Speakers at the workshop included School of IT Head Professor Lee Poh Aun, who spoke on ‘Stochastic Modelling and Image Processing’ and, Dr Simon Egerton who spoke about ‘3001 a Robotics Odyssey: A Brief History of the Future’.

Dr Egerton touched on subjects such as robotics as a consumer revolution, robotics as a military revolution, open problems in AI (Artificial Intelligence) to robotics as well as active research projects within Monash University’s School of IT.

In addition, Professor Pervaiz Ahmed the Director of Postgraduate Studies from the School of Business was also on hand and talked about ‘Where it All Begins: The Research Question and Its Execution Method’.

Emeritus Professor Walter C. K. Wong who is the Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor of Monash University Sunway campus and Professor Ron Weber who is the Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology across all campuses of Monash, were also there to give their welcoming address and keynote address respectively.
