As part of efforts to develop research
activity at its new campus, Monash University Malaysia is offering
36 full scholarships for postgraduate studies.
These scholarships are worth more than RM1.7
million and are considered as an essential investment by the
university to develop research activities at the campus and
nationally.
The scholarships cover the tuition fees and a
small monthly stipend for graduate students who take up the Higher
Degree by Research programmes at the university’s campus in Bandar
Sunway.
“The scholarships cover the course fees, as
well as a little extra for expenses, and are only available for full
time studies,” said Professor Walter Wong, Monash University
Malaysia’s Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor.
He said each full-time PhD scholarship was
worth RM54,000 yearly, while each full-time Master’s scholarships
was worth RM48,000 annually.
The fields of study available are in Arts &
Sciences, Business, Engineering, Information Technology and Medicine
& Health Sciences.
Professor Wong said the graduate students will
work with a team of dynamic academics and some would work on
projects undertaken in collaboration with industry.
“We on the lookout to increase our research
partnerships with industries,” said Professor Wong, adding that
Monash University Malaysia had much intellectual capital and
research facilities to offer.
“Being one of Monash University’s eight
campuses in Australia, Malaysia and South Africa, we also have an
international network of researchers and assets that can be utilised
for high level research.”
“The university has 75 research centres and 17
cooperative research centres around the world and as it moves into
its purpose-built campus this year, we will endeavour to widen and
deepen research activities,” Professor Wong.
Monash is also one of Australia’s leading
‘Group of Eight’ universities recognised for excellence in teaching,
learning & research outcomes.
“The new campus, which will be open for the
July intake, will feature numerous research clusters that have
researchers working locally and internationally to seek new
knowledge or solutions for current issues facing society.
Monash University’s goal in ‘Engaging the
World’ is to actively work with the communities in which its eight
campuses worldwide are situated, and contribute in a collegial and
cooperative way to the development of these communities.
Professor Wong said the university was also
seeking funding for research.
“The government, through the Ministry of
Science, Technology and the Environment, recently provided funding
for a number of Monash University research projects and initiatives
in areas that can have an impact on people not only in Malaysia, but
also globally.”
Professor Wong said this year, Monash
University will see the commencement of a world class Brain Research
Institute, which will be led by leading neuroscientist Professor
Ishwar Parhar.
