Unique staff incentive secures RM15,000 for WWF Malaysia .

In what must be novel approach in Malaysia, Monash University recently donated RM15,000 to WWF Malaysia as part of an incentive offered to staff for their feedback on their work experience.

The money was an incentive offered by the university to staff participating in a Staff Attitude Survey carried out recently at its campuses in Australia, Malaysia and South Africa.

The survey was an important university initiative aimed at gaining valuable feedback from university staff to support efforts to improve staff experience. To encourage more staff to participate, the university offered to allocate money for selected charities if more staff participated in the voluntary detailed survey.

Following the survey this year, Monash University donated AUS$20,226 to the Greenfleet Tree Planting Program in Australia, which plants native trees on behalf of organisations and individuals, and AUS$5,000 to the Eco-Schools programme in South Africa. The Eco-Schools programme is a global initiative aimed at providing environmental education at schools.

"This concept of using donations to charity as a staff incentive is new and I'm pleased that our staff have responded to this incentive. In effect, the money we're presenting today has been indirectly earned by our staff through their participation in the survey," said the university's Pro Vice-Chancellor and President ( Malaysia) Professor Merilyn Liddell before presenting the cheque to WWF Malaysia's Senior Director for Support Operations Mr Sudeep Mohandas.

She also thanked university staff who participated in the survey, as it allowed the university to make a small but worthwhile contribution to WWF Malaysia.

"Professor Liddell said the university has an institutional commitment to sustainable environment and this policy applies to all its campuses and related entities. The university has also implemented several other initiatives to encourage environmental awareness at the practical and administrative levels."

The presentation ceremony, held during the "Love the Environment Day" organised by the Malaysian Nature Society of Monash, included a presentation by WWF Malaysia's Team Leader for Tiger Conservation, Mr Brian Lee, on the Tigers in Peninsular Malaysia.
