Getting a heads up on career opportunities

8 May 2008

A total of 50 employers made a bee line to Monash University recently for its annual Career Fair, an event aimed at matchmaking students with potential employers from the various industrial and services sectors.

Participating employers, who included leading firms of their respective sectors, distributed brochures and information on their business activities to students of the various degree programs taught at the Sunway campus. Among the firms present were Shell Malaysia, F-Secure, the Sunway Group, National Instruments, Bank Negara Malaysia and The Nielsen Company.

Student Services Assistant Manager, Ms Charmaine Paramanathan said the annual event attracts significant interest among graduating students. Thanks to such sessions, many students are able gain information in advance on employment opportunities available upon graduation. Some students, she said, have been able to secure very good jobs immediately upon graduating.

“Aside from the Fair, a number of firms have also carried out Career Talks on campus, sharing information about their areas of business and providing students with a heads up on their prospective fields of work,” added Ms Charmaine.

Prior to the Career Fair, three events were held to give a further insight to the working world for students. A talk on ‘Resume Writing and Interview Skills’ was held and the speaker for the event was Ms Janice Teng who has impressive HR experience. This was followed by a workshop titled ‘Dealing with Change – Transition to the Working World’. The workshop was aimed at giving young graduates the ‘right nudge’ towards becoming capable leaders and having a clear idea about their career direction.

Apart from that, a ‘Corporate Grooming Workshop’ by Clinique was conducted to show students the art of grooming and being presentable for the corporate world.

In the end, the participating employers gave positive that the event was well organized and ran smoothly. They also mentioned that the quality of Monash students is very good. - By Anita Hadi
