Monash hosts Vietnamese and MOHE delegation8 January 2008Monash University today hosted a delegation from Vietnam visiting Malaysia on a familiarisation trip hosted by the Ministry of Higher Education. The group comprised 17 representatives from Vietnamese schools, student recruitment agencies and members of the press. On arrival, the group were welcomed by Pro Vice-Chancellor and President ( Malaysia) Professor Robin Pollard, who said the university was keen to increase the number of Vietnamese students on campus. Professor Pollard said Malaysia was a very attractive higher education destination due to the openness of its society, its ethnic and cultural diversity and the overall quality of life. The Malaysian campus has attracted a large number of international students, who currently make up about 30% of its 3,400 students. The group, led by Mr Azhar Mohd Salleh, the Education Attaché at the Malaysian Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City, later toured the Sunway campus. Mr Azhar said the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education is keen to increase the number of Vietnamese students in Malaysia, who currently number about 800. “The purpose of the visit is to showcase Malaysian education and its attractiveness as a regional hub for quality education,” Mr.Azhar explained. He said the visit provided an opportunity for members of the Vietnamese education industry and its media to observe at first hand the education opportunities and education infrastructure in Malaysia. “The new Monash University campus in Sunway is indeed impressive and with the facilities available, we are certain that we can attract more students to the country.” During their visit, the Vietnamese delegation visited a total of 10 education institutions in the Klang Valley. – Jasbir Singh/Anita Hadi
