Victoria Governor launches Monash 10th anniversary celebration

21 July 2008

Professor David de Kretser, the Governor of Victoria, Australia, today launched the Monash University’s Sunway campus’ 10th Anniversary Celebration at its campus in Bandar Sunway.

The launch includes the opening of a week-long public showcase organised by the university to display its achievements in education and research in Malaysia. Also present at the event were Sunway Group Founder and Chairman Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah, Monash University's Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) Professor Stephanie Fahey, and senior staff from Monash University and the Sunway group.

Events planned for the week include research presentations in Arts & Social Sciences, Business, Engineering, Information Technology, Medicine and Science, booth exhibitions by the various Schools at the campus, campus tours for the public and student-related activities.

The Sunway campus, established here in partnership with the Sunway Group’s Sunway Education Trust, is the first foreign university campus to reach the 10-year milestone.

“The success of the campus reflects the successful implementation by the Malaysian Government of the decision to open the country’s doors to foreign university campuses,” said Professor Robin Pollard, Pro Vice-Chancellor and President ( Malaysia).

“This decision has created undergraduate and postgraduate education opportunities for thousands of Malaysians who can get a world-class education without leaving its shores. It has also contributed to the development of its knowledge capital through research activity.”

“Another unique feature of the campus is its operation as a joint-venture with the Malaysian conglomerate the Sunway Group, through the Sunway Education Trust. Monash is an Australian public university and the Trust is an entity created by the Group to further education opportunities for Malaysians.”

“This synergy of goals has allowed us to create an institution focused on high quality education and research, with income generated from the operation in Malaysia re-invested into the campus for development and research.”

“This partnership is growing from strength to strength and we see the Sunway campus being a strong legacy for the future as a premier, private, research-intensive university campus that contributes to Malaysia and the region through excellence in education and research.”

Members of the public are invited to visit the Sunway campus and participate in the events planned during the week.
