Prestigious national award for Monash staff

Professor Dato’ Dr Khalid Kadir, head of Monash University’s Clinical School in Johor Bahru and one of Malaysia’s leading experts in diabetes has been named a co-recipient of Malaysia’s prestigious Merdeka Award for the Health, Science and Technology category.

He shares his award with the Nipah Encephalitis Investigation Team from the Faculty of Medicine Universiti Malaya. The award carries a cash prize of RM500,000, a trophy and a certificate that will be presented later this year.

Dr Khalid was recognised for his research on diabetes and the relationship between hormones and stresses in various tissues.

The Merdeka Awards, jointly initiated by oil firms Petronas, ExxonMobil and Shell, was introduced to recognise those who have made great contributions to Malaysia and her people.

 “This is a personal honour for Prof. Khalid, in recognition of his outstanding research on diabetes and the relationship between hormones and tissue stress,” said Pro Vice-Chancellor and President (Malaysia) Professor Robin Pollard.

“I would like to congratulate Dr Khalid who will receive the Merdeka Award this year,” he added.

The Award is open to all living Malaysian citizens. However, non-citizens may also be eligible for the Outstanding Contribution to the People of Malaysia category.

The Award is also open to institutions or organisations except in the Outstanding Scholastic Achievement category.
Other recipients were Royal Professor Ungku Abdul Aziz Ungku Abdul Hamid for the Education and Community category, The Malaysian Nature Society for the Environment category, and Datuk Leslie Davidson for the Outstanding Contribution To The People of Malaysia category.

No award was presented this year for the Outstanding Scholastic Achievement Award. - Jasbir Singh
