Fun and exciting Orientation Week for Monash newbies10 July 2008 Monash University Sunway campus was abuzz with activities. This would usually be a normal sight except for the fact that more than 400 students were on campus, eager to begin their university life. The sight of the students gave life to the campus which was all quiet during the semester break. The students were welcomed by Professor Robin Pollard, Pro Vice-Chancellor and President (Malaysia). This was followed with another speech by Darren Ng, President of Monash University Student Association (MUSA). After that, the students were given a general introduction of the campus along with highlights on student activities which includes the Monash Ball and the Monash Street Carnival. Once that was over, the newbies proceeded to have refreshments and were greeted with a carnival like atmosphere at the foyer as various games booth were setup for them so that they can just have fun and win some prizes. While the students were taking part in the games, performances by senior students were also taking place to provide entertainment for them. These include ballroom dancing, live band performances and even a capoeira demonstration. Following that, a briefing for international students took place to ensure that they are well informed about living in Malaysia particularly Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. The students who are from different countries including Tanzania, Sri Lanka and Indonesia then participated in the Cultural Adaptation workshop which was held for them to get to know each other via various fun and games. Throughout the week, the freshies were briefed about their respective courses they will be undertaking. They were also taken for a campus tour to familiarize themselves with the campus before their classes starts the following week. During the whole Orientation Week, ‘Buddies’ which are made up of senior students were always on hand to help the students and answer various questions regarding the university and their studies at Monash. Monash University is indeed the place to be. While the university prides itself as being a research driven university with high standards of academic excellence, it also gives students a balanced lifestyle so that they will enjoy being a student through different clubs and societies which organizes a wide spectrum of activities. – Anita Hadi.
