6 August 2008

Monash University has organised a seminar for nurses keen to carry out research as part of their further education efforts - a rare development opportunity for nurses in Malaysia.

The ‘Research in Nursing – Getting started’ seminar on August 8-9, was devoted to examine research paradigms and examples of various approaches to research.

It also featured specialist workshops that took a learner-centred approach to the development of skills relevant to processes in actioning, disseminating and applying research.

“Monash University is very pleased to offer an exciting professional development opportunity for registered nurses," said Professor Karen Francis, head, School of Nursing and Midwifery.

"This seminar is designed both for nurses who are keen to increase their understanding of research of significance to nursing.

"The ability to provide nursing care on the basis of best available evidence requires knowledge of fundamental concepts and skills in the critical appraisal and application of research outcomes.

"Participation in investigative research is dependent upon an understanding of the research process and skills in development, investigative techniques and findings dissemination."

"This seminar will provide nurses with an introduction to those fundamental research concepts and processes."

About 150 nurses attended the seminar, which costs RM150 for registered nurses and RM50 for students, and was held at the Monash University campus in Bandar Sunway.- Jasbir Singh
