Monash University is committed to being a premier teaching and research institution through its Sunway campus, making significant contributions to Malaysia and to South-East Asia. In addition to Sunway campus, Monash has five campuses in Melbourne, a campus in regional Victoria, and a campus in Johannesburg.
Sunway campus was formed in 1998 and relocated to a new site in mid-2007. It currently accommodates some 3,800 students and 391 staff. We provide undergraduate, postgraduate and research programs in business, science, information technology, medicine, arts and engineering. All awards are at degree-level, and range from bachelor to doctorate level.
Research specialties include media and cultural studies, plant genetics and cell technology, Islamic banking and finance, clean energy systems, content-based multimedia information retrieval, neuroscience and nanotechnology. Robust quality assurance mechanisms ensure high quality across all Monash campuses.
The emphasis at Monash, on teaching and research, is unique amongst private providers in Malaysia. It stems from our belief that tertiary education should be research-led. Lecturers are expert in their field of specialisation, and are expected to be making enduring contributions to human knowledge. This permits them and their students to test and analyse both old and new problems with scholarship and intellectual integrity. Monash students learn, not by memorisation of accepted dogma, but by critical enquiry and application of intelligence. Academic staff members help students to learn, but even more importantly our students learn how to learn by themselves.
Monash students are empowered through this learning. They may find exciting opportunities in the workforce, or they may go on to postgraduate-level study. Students and staff alike are challenged to address important theoretical and practical issues. Our emphasis on excellence in learning and scholarship provides the foundation for personal and professional development.
At Monash we talk about the community of scholars that is formed by our students and staff. There is an active student body with representation on campus committees.
