Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery

The MBBS Program is offered through the Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine at the custom-built Sunway campus in Bandar Sunway and the new Clinical School in Johor Bahru. To date it is the only Medical course outside Australia and New Zealand to have received the accreditation of the Australian Medical Council.

The medical curriculum provides an interdisciplinary program, organised to provide integration of structure and function within the biomedical sciences. An emphasis on clinical communication skills and early clinical contact visits to medical practices, community care facilities and hospitals, is a feature of the Monash course.

All students will undertake Years 1 and 2 of the course on-campus in Bandar Sunway. Years 3 to 5 will be based at the Clinical School in Johor, with clinical studies centred in the Sultanah Aminah Hospital , a tertiary and referral hospital in Johor Bahru. Johor Bahru is at the southern-most point of the Malaysian Peninsula (just across the causeway from Singapore).

The five-year curriculum is designed as an integrated structure incorporating four themes:

  • Personal and professional development
  • Population, society, health and illness
  • Scientific basis of clinical practice
  • Clinical skills

During the early years of the course, the basic medical and behavioural sciences (anatomy, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, psychology and sociology) are introduced within interdisciplinary units. These units will all have a major focus on clinical issues through clinical case studies.

The first two years of the course are largely campus-based, with an opportunity for community-based program placements where students spend time working in a community setting with clients of welfare agencies.

The third and fourth years are conducted in clinical settings, generally hospitals and practices. Students are presented with a series of problem-based and case-based learning sessions. As well as clinical rotations in women's and children's health, general practice and psychological medicine

The fifth year gives students the chance for elective and selective studies. Students have the opportunity to complete their degree by gaining wider experience in chosen disciplines and specific areas of interest through a range of urban, rural and overseas settings.

Career outcomes

The career of a doctor involves further training beyond the medical degree. In Malaysia, on completion of the medical course, students need to apply to the Ministry of Health Malaysia to do their housemanship in any of the public hospitals. On completion of housemanship, there is a three-year compulsory service in hospitals and clinics under the Ministry of Health Malaysia.

To be conferred with a specialist degree in a range of areas, such as surgery, obstetrics, paediatrics or psychiatry or others, you must do further study to obtain a Masters of Medicine.
