Insights into a bio-based company

The School of Science held its first ever BioBusiness Talk on 1 August 2017. The dialogue session with Dr Tom Beardslee, Vice President of R&D, Verdezyne Inc. moderated by Dato’ Dr Mohd Nazlee Kamal, Chairman of Industry Advisory Board, School of Science, Monash University Malaysia & Director of BioTalent Malaysia, aimed to provide an understanding on what bio-based companies are and what they focus on.

Dr Beardslee, who leads a world-class team of scientists and engineers in developing

technology for the production of biobased chemicals, provided insights into bio-based companies and what employers are looking for when recruiting talents. He also talked about the future of bio-based materials and touched on the history of Verdezyne, a company that was incepted in 2008. Dr Beardslee also shared about Verdezyne Inc.’s new facility in Malaysia, which aims to direct the power of biology to create bio-based processes for clean and sustainable chemicals.

“Hands-on experiences are good and early internship programs are very valuable. If you are looking for help, do not hesitate to ask advice from people in the industry. Get on LinkedIn and network with people,” stated Dr Beardslee.

During the dialogue, Dato’ Nazlee stressed on the importance of networking and encouraged students to talk to Dr Beardslee during the networking session. The talk was attended by Professor Mahendhiran Nair, Vice-President (Research & Development), lecturers and students from the School of Science.
