Monash organises science workshop for A-Levels students
More than 30 A-Levels students from the Sunway University College were recently given the opportunity to gain first hand experience of university life through a science workshop at Monash University.
The one-day workshop saw students carry out an experiment called Spectrophotometric Analysis of Iron in Water Samples. The experiment is widely used by various industries in order to analyze the presence of iron in water samples.
Led by Dr Emily Goh, a lecturer from the School of Science, the experiment saw students learning how to use laboratory equipment to determine the iron concentration in a number of water samples.
The Spectrophotometric analysis is based on the Beer-Lambert Law and it explains the relationship between absorbance and concentration or iron in different water samples. This gives students a chance to learn about the purpose of the experiment as well as to give them a step-by-step guidance on how to conduct the experiment properly.
Apart from that, the experiment is also aimed to let the students gain experience and also a practical understanding of ultraviolet and visible spectrophotometry. Asides that, it also allowed students to get a more hands on and practical understanding of calibration by using common iron concentration in order to construct calibration curves and at the same time to determine iron concentration in various water samples.
The students, who will be completing their pre-university studies at the end of next year, were also accompanied by two Science lecturers. Most of them are aspiring to one day work in fields and industries related to science, engineering and medicine.
Apart from the workshop and the experiment, the students were also given a tour of the new Monash University campus. They had a taste of university life as well as to view the facilities and resources available at Monash University’s newly opened Sunway campus.
