Vice-Chancellor Award for Sunway Campus staff
In recognition of her commitment to support student learning, as well as her willingness to venture beyond traditional ways of teaching, Dr Catherine Yule from Monash University’s Sunway campus has been awarded the 2007 Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence. Dr Yule, Senior Lecturer at the School of Arts and Science is one of the pioneering academicians at Monash University’s campus in Malaysia. Her areas of expertise include tropical aquatic ecology, freshwater invertebrates and tropical peat swamps. A keen environmentalist, Dr Yule has also co-authored a book titled “Freshwater Invertebrates of the Malaysian Region”. The book was the first publication to take a region-wide look at freshwater invertebrates from different parts of Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand. To win the Vice-Chancellor’s Award, Dr Yule was assessed on several criteria including approaches to teaching that influence, motivate and inspire students to learn; development of curricula and resources that reflect a command of the field; approaches to assessment and feedback that foster independent learning; respect and support for the development of students as individuals and scholarly activities that have influenced and enhanced teaching and learning. Following the award, Dr Yule will be invited to attend and participate in various seminars, presentations and workshops for the teaching staff of the university.
