Monash graduate receives prestigious scholarship from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong

Low Ley Hian did Monash proud recently by being the only student from a private education institution to receive a scholarship from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin in Istana Negara recently.

Ley Hian, one of only 12 outstanding students who were presented with scholarships, will pursue his doctorate in neuroscience at the University of Melbourne which will take three and a half years. Five other scholarship recipients will also be pursuing their doctorates while the remaining six will be doing their masters. The scholarship will cover tuition fee costs and provide Ley Hian with a living allowance.

The 24 year old Ley Hian who graduated from Monash in September 2006 with a First Class BSc (Honours) in Biotechnology, is currently working as a research assistant at Monash. “I want to inspire others like me to aspire and work hard in achieving their dreams. I also want to prove that the government does support those from private education institutions,”added Ley Hian.

Besides achieving his First Class Honours degree from Monash, Ley Hian has also received other accolades including The Golden Key International Honour Society Membership, which encourages and recognizes scholastic achievement and excellence among college and university students.

During the scholarship presentation event, Ley Hian had a chance to chat with the Agong over breakfast. The scholarship was introduced by the government last year and is managed by the Public Service Department. – by Anita Hadi.
