Workshops for students on food science &
technology
Some 180 secondary students will have the
opportunity to see first hand the science used to produce some of
the food items that we consume daily during a Food Science &
Technology fair at Monash University’s Sunway campus next week.
The event, held on March 23-24 to coincide
with the university’s launch of a Food Science & Technology degree
course, will see some big names in the food industry showcase their
expertise and products.
These firms, which include Nestle, Marigold,
Yakult, will share some of their knowledge to help better public
understanding of food science & technology, as well as how food
impacts health and well being.
Seven public seminars and three workshops have
been planned for pre-university and secondary school students, said
event coordinator Associate Professor Dr Song Keang Peng.
“We have allocated space for about 60 students
in each workshop and it is a good opportunity for the students to
gain a first hand understanding of how technology is applied in the
food industry,” said Dr Song.
“They will cover topics like cryogenic
applications in food technology, drinking water, enzyme and food,
fermented food, as well as a presentation on the science and
research behind the Yakult product.
“Another interesting topic to be covered
during the event will be the use of dragon fruit to produce wine.”
Dr Song said there will also be an exhibition
showcasing research and technology in the field of food science and
technology. Free samples of food will also be given away by the
companies.
The visiting students will also be able to take
part in games offering tickets to the movie Mr Bean’s Holiday,
