Monash University Sunway campus takes measures to deal with influenza A(H1N1)
14 August 2009
1) Is it true there have been two confirmed influenza A(H1N1) cases on campus?
A student was confirmed to have contracted the virus on August 7 and is recovering. All students in the same year of study as this student were quarantined for seven days and none has since shown symptoms of influenza. A staff member was also confirmed to have contracted the virus on August 10. Several colleagues who were in contact with that person have been quarantined for seven days. All are currently well.
2) What measures is the campus taking to ensure the safety of students and staff?
Community awareness and mitigation procedures as advised by the Ministry of Health have been carried out extensively on campus. Continuing communications include broadcast emails, the web, notices and signs around the campus. Hand sanitizers and face masks are available for staff and students at entrances and through administrative and school offices. The campus instituted voluntary temperature scanning for all entering its premises and those found to have an elevated temperature are advised to use a mask and seek medical care.
3) Is there a need for the campus to close due to the influenza A(H1N1) cases?
That is a decision for the health authorities, and we will act on their advice.
4) Is the campus in communication with the Ministry of Health?
The campus is following all advice issued by the Ministry of Health.
