Sunway campus steps up readiness for A(H1N1) influenza
25 June 2009
Monash University Sunway campus has closely monitored the development of A(H1N1) influenza, and has evaluated possible responses with care and on advice. The campus is taking its cues from the University, the World Health Organisation, and the Malaysian and Australian governments.
In the past month the campus has sought to educate its community through broadcast e-mails and posters. Staff and students have been advised on effective hand-washing and cough etiquette, and have been urged to contact a doctor should they exhibit any flu-like symptoms.
The high level of staff and student travel that normally occurs between Monash campuses has also been considered.
The University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Richard Larkins AO, requested that staff reconsider the need to travel to Malaysia on university business. He said that this was not a travel ban, but given the concern within Malaysia, staff should consider alternative means of working across campuses including videoconferencing. No staff or student should travel internationally on behalf of the university if they are unwell.
Sunway campus now attracts a considerable number of international students. In 2009, some 155 students from Australia will study at Sunway, and this is a highly valued part of their education. In total, there are some 1,100 international students on campus representing 68 countries. Rather than curtail these activities, accommodation arrangements have been made for students from Australia and other affected areas for a period of quarantine before entering the campus.
