You will meet the Monash English language requirements if you have taken an English language proficiency test within 24 months of your course start date and have achieved the results below. You must include the original TOEFL or TWE test report with your application.

If you have more than one of the test scores listed below, only the most recent achievement will be considered in the entry decision.


Undergraduate study (TOEFL or IELTS score)

The table below outlines the TOEFL or IELTS score required for most of our undergraduate courses, but please note that higher scores and specific entry requirements are required for the Bachelor of Pharmacy and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. Please check with the respective school to confirm the latest language requirements for their postgraduate courses. You may also contact the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences if you have any questions.

  • minimum test score of 6.5 overall
  • at least 6.0 in each individual band
Paper-based TOEFL (American Test of English as a Foreign Language)
  • minimum test score of 550
  • Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 4.5
Internet-based TOEFL (American Test of English as a Foreign Language)
  • score of at least 79 overall
  • writing score of at least 21
  • speaking score of at least 18
  • reading score at least 13
  • listening score of 12
 PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English)
    Overall test score: 58 with minimum Communicative skills scores:
  • Listening: 50
  • Reading: 50
  • Speaking: 50
  • Writing: 50


Postgraduate coursework study

The scores in the table below are the minimum English requirements for postgraduate coursework study. Some postgraduate courses, including medicine and business have higher TOEFL or IELTS score requirements.

Please check with the respective school to confirm the latest language requirements for their postgraduate courses.

  • score of at least 100 overall
  • writing score of at least 24
  • no score lower than 20 on the other sections of the test
  •  score of at least 79 overall
  • writing score of at least 21
  • speaking score of at least 18
  • reading score of at least 13
  • listening score of at least 12
PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English)
    Overall test score: 58 with minimum Communicative skills scores:
