Wong Swee Soon Memorial Award to be renamed as Dr. CY Wong Memorial Award 

Introduction and Brief History

The Wong Swee Soon Memorial Award has been established at the School of Information Technology for over 10 years. Initially the award was instigated to recognise the Best IT graduates annually and effective 2021, this award was given twice per year to coincide with the two Monash graduation ceremonies. This award is to encourage the young graduates to strive for academic excellence in their studies. The winner receives a certificate and RM3,000 prize money.

About the founder of the award

Dr. Wong was a Monash electrical engineering graduate (BE 1982, PhD Eng 1993), who has spent 24 years in the IT Industry - including 17 years at Microsoft Australia and Malaysia. With an enviable career background and strong industry connections, Dr Wong was passionate about helping to shape the career paths of up-and-coming professionals.

For seven years, Dr. Wong also worked with the School of IT, Monash University Malaysia. He was a representative of the school's Industry Advisory Panel where he focused on increasing student awareness on preparedness to the industry and professionalism at work. He was the one who initiated the industry insight program activities, mainly organising Industry Talks for all the students of School of IT.

Dr. Wong believes that students should start learning about the IT industry as early as possible. He was of the opinion that Industry placement is the ideal vehicle for the students to gain insights of the practical application of theories they learnt in the class. He supported the school to form a group of companies who collaborated by providing Industry Based Learning (IBL) opportunities to our undergraduate students.

Future direction of the award

The family of Dr Wong Chek Yoon has decided to rename the award as Dr. CY WONG MEMORIAL AWARD from 2023 as he is the founder. In memory of his great service to the society, especially to the IT industry and Monash University Malaysia, they wish to continue this award for another 5 years.
