Privatisation of the public sector

In an effort to slim down our 'bloated' civil service, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the government was considering a move to privatise some areas of the public sector. When asked about the Prime Minister's move, Professor Mahendhiran Nair, Vice President (Research and Development), CEO of Monash Malaysia R&D and Professor in the School of Business said: "The privatisation we are talking about is very different from 30 years ago. Today, markets are much more competitive, agile and dynamic. So privatisation needs to take into account a number of factors. Do we have the right leadership to lead privatisation? Will entities be able to take on some of the global players?"
