Sue Yen shared with the webinar’s participants about her experience with her colleagues to change their project into a serious social enterprise upon the completion of their fellowship with Teach for Malaysia.  She then highlighted about the role of volunteers, as alternate human resources, in addition to paid employees to help MYReaders in achieving the social mission of “One day, every child in Malaysia will be able to read”. Sue Yen also shared in greater details about the whole volunteer engagement procedure; she also pinpointed the tips to not only attract but also retaining volunteers for a longer term.

David introduced the Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity Centre (MaGIC), a government agency, as the key social entrepreneurship ecosystem builder in Malaysia. He also shared the current funding opportunity, Social Impact Matching (SIM) Grant available in Magic. David also enlightened the audiences with the funding structure of most social entrepreneurs in Malaysia and Southeast Asian. He also offered some tips in preparing the grant proposal to increase chances of success in securing funds. The session was ended with the exciting Buy for Impact Movement recently launched by MaGIC.

Zenna started the session with her experiences in making the decision on the current social entrepreneurship model (an ethical employment agency) in tackling the human right issues of migrant domestic workers in Malaysia. She shared resources, practicality, and having the interest of target beneficiaries as the top priority are some of the considerations she had when exploring and deciding between different potential solutions in addressing abusive working conditions of migrant domestic workers in Malaysia. Finally, Zenna highlighted the needs to have thorough strategic planning, but remained flexible and up-to-date with emerging issues from time to time, in order to stay relevant.

Suja started the session with his motivation and experience to initiate Elom Empowerment as a former refugee. He highlighted empowerment as the key ingredient to address refugee issues globally. Suja also identified some of the constraints with NGO and charity initiatives, which social entrepreneurship could fill the gap in empowering the refugees. He ended the session by encouraging more young people to care and be involved in various social issues.

Dr Loy introduced the design thinking as “a human or people-centred approach to problem solving, drawing on innovative practices to create solutions that are desirable, feasible, and viable” to the beginning of the session. He went on to explain the model of design thinking in details, which involves, empathize, define, ideate, prototype and test. Dr Loy enlightens the audiences with real-life examples of how design thinking is implemented in practice. Finally, He illustrated how design thinking could be applied in the social entrepreneurship context.
