Dr. Buriata Eti-Tofinga from Kiribati is a Lecturer at the School of Business, Monash University Malaysia. She previously taught for 5 years at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji. She received a Gold Medal for her PhD research which looked at how social entrepreneurship is enacted by organizations in the political, economic, and social environment of small island developing states. She completed a Master of Commerce in Strategy and Innovation from the University of Sydney in Australia and holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration in Economics and International Business from Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. While in Australia, she joined the Remote and Rural Enterprise (RARE) Program and worked with social enterprises such as The Green Project of Resource Recovery Australia, and Fair Business (later renamed to Food Ladder). Prior to joining academia, she worked for the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives in Kiribati, and the Department of Environment in Fiji. She also worked in regional and international organizations in the Pacific region, in particular UNDP and Pacific Trade Invest.
She is a research partner for the International Comparative Social Enterprise Models (ICSEM) Project, and member of the EMES International Research Network. Her current research looks at the role of social entrepreneurship and social enterprises in (1) creating sustainable communities and (2) empowering women and young people. She is also interested in studying the economic and social orientation of hybrid organizations and influence of context and dual logics on strategy and organizational performance. Her work has been published in the European Business Review, Journal of Organizational Change Management, Social Enterprise Journal and the Sustainability Accounting, Management and Policy Journal.
