Nazirul Hazim is currently conducting a Ph.D. research in Monash University Malaysia; focusing on the innovative startup ecosystem. This led to him being an active participant in the local startup scene, especially based in the Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Centre (MaGIC) in Cyberjaya. His Ph.D. is under the supervision of Associate Professor Santha Vaithilingam, Professor Mahendhiran Nair and Professor Pervaiz Ahmed.
He earned an undergraduate Honours degree from the same institution in Econometrics & Business Statistics in 2013. He has written an Honours thesis on the Malaysian Islamic monetary transmission mechanism, which was presented at the International Statistical Institute Regional Statistics Conference (ISI-RSC, 2014). His other works have been presented at the World Statistics Congress (ISI-WSC, 2015) and the American Accounting Association Annual Meeting (AAA, 2013). He was awarded the World Bank Fund for Statistical Capacity Building worth USD 6,000 to attend the 60th International Statistical Institute’s World Statistics Congress in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
He is a member of the World Statistics Congress 2019 Academic Committee, comprising of the Deputy Chief Statistician, Head of Central Bank Statistics Department, and deans and heads of statistics faculties and departments from local universities. The committee chooses topics and papers to be presented at the 2017 World Statistics Congress in Morocco and 2019 World Statistics Congress in Kuala Lumpur. He was involved in the study of the Malaysian knowledge economy (MyKE III) which includes formulating framework and surveys for about 4000 firms in 21 sectors, and training the heads of the state offices of the Department of Statistics of Malaysia (DOSM). It is a collaboration between Monash University Malaysia, the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) in the Prime Minister’s Department (JPM), and the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM). The results of this study contributes to policy formulation in the 11th Malaysia Plan.
He teaches ETW3410 (Applied Econometrics), ETW2410 (Introductory Econometrics), and ETW1102 (Business Statistics).
