What’s new?

As the 2014 academic year comes to a close, we reflect and review our successes and failures as part of transformative reflection. This kind of reflection goes beyond identifying the needs and wants of learners and teachers and demands action to transform learning in exciting and creative ways.

We intend transforming our discoveries into actions that will impact the quality of learning at a deep level to benefit both our local and global communities in ways that we have yet to imagine. For the new year ahead, we plan to introduce: student engagement activities with a focus on design thinking perspectives and strategies as critical enablers; to prepare our undergraduate cohorts to embrace inter-professionalism with commitment to becoming global citizens; and to continue to support peer–on-peer learning through the PASS (Peer Assisted Study Sessions) program so that all learners are empowered to act on their convictions.

Our new Education Management website will be populated with resources and news of quality teaching and learning approaches and strategies to support learning enhancement.

Education Innovators Forum resources (Be Kind to Those who Ask, Recording Lectures, Answering Exam Questions, Holistic Framework to Enhance Learning Design: The GCHE Case Study and Creativity) are introduced as short, easy to read resources. These resources may generate further discussion, inspire research and expand our education worldviews and philosophies of learning and teaching to encourage us to embrace diversity, equity and inclusivity in practice.

What’s not?

Our diverse perspectives and approaches to learning and teaching are deeply embedded in our worldviews, our stereotypical lenses and our cultural assumptions about learning and teaching approaches. In engaging with each other we learn new and different ways of viewing the world around us, we explore new knowledges and learn to respect the indigenous perspectives as yet another enriching experience of the world of learning and teaching. Disciplinary training and knowledge influences and shapes our perspectives creating spaces for innovative practice.

Multidisciplinary collaborations

It is within the exploratory stages of multidisciplinary collaborations that we stumble upon opportunities to create spaces for innovative practice. We fearlessly cross disciplinary boundaries and focus on what will be rather than what is (Biggs and Tang, 2011) through transformative reflection ensuring that our actions will produce tangible outcomes.

Over the past months collaborations on a multidisciplinary level were visible in the following ongoing dialogue.

  • The School of Information Technology also explored a student education project on constructive feedback in collaboration with EM.
  • The School of Pharmacy invited EM to plan and host a team discussion around vision and values for about 16 staff in September.
  • The School of Medicine invited EM to a School meeting in October to provide support and solutions to various challenges on student and staff development matters including questions about quality assurance and student recruitment.
  • The School of Business invited EM to a School meeting to present on the role and services of EM in September.
  • Ongoing EM consultation with the Director of MBA program (Prof Iain Densten) on program development, staff retreat planning and promotion of MBA.
  • EM team (Learning Skills Advisors) collaborations with Library and Learning Commons staff on the Multidisciplinary Integrated Skills Program implementation within and across Schools.
  • GCHE consultation and discussions with the Interim Course Coordinator (Dr Susan Thomas) on the Semester 1 course design and the future of GCHE at Monash University Malaysia.
    - EM invited to the evaluation of the semester 1 GCHE program.
    - EM submitted recommendations to School of Arts and Social Sciences for an alternative GCHE model taking into consideration feedback from Schools.
  • Collaborative approach taken in the PVC Learning Spaces Steering Committee from June to December 2014.
  • Organised a learning spaces equipment audit meeting with key stakeholders (Facilities Management, ITS, Timetabling and Schools) in September and November.
  • Organised an interest group on the development of a campus multimedia centre with stakeholders from SASS, Engineering, Business and the Library.
  • Liaised with colleagues at Sunway University, ASLI, Taylor’s University and GlobaNxt University and represented Monash University Malaysia.
  • Invited to attend the student celebration of the Oman National Day in December 2014.


Education Management recently held two inaugural events. In October, the EM team together with the Education Innovators Forum team hosted the first campus wide Education Innovators Forum to engage in discussion on the critical concerns in learning and teaching with the goal of finding innovative solutions that will effectively respond to learning and teaching concerns.

In October, the EM team together with the Education Innovators Forum team hosted the first campus wide Education Innovators Forum to engage in discussion on the critical concerns in learning and teaching with the goal of finding innovative solutions.

The first Education Management symposium was also held in October to celebrate innovative practice at Monash University Malaysia among staff and students bringing to the fore exciting learning and teaching practices that pushed the boundaries on a number of levels.

Collaborations is another outcome of the first Education Innovators Forum that Education Management hosted in June 2014. The Forum is a Monash Malaysia approach to assessing learning and teaching needs across campus. It is variation of the World Café and The Art of Conversations that Matter event that was hosted by the Education Management team in the Campus Education Office to encourage inter-school/ department and multidisciplinary conversations about learning and teaching at Monash University Malaysia. Collaborations was the topic of concern for Hassan Yusuf Osman, a founding member of the Education innovators Forum team.

Participants who attended the event agreed to form an Education Innovators team and to host the forum at the invitation of Schools and departments to facilitate ongoing dialogue about learning and teaching concerns, as required. The Education Innovators Forum Resources are developed by the discussion facilitators of various topics that were identified as critical learning and teaching concerns and dilemmas at the Forum. Each resource is designed in the form of an easy to read short information brochure on a specific topic. It can be used to facilitate discussion among colleagues and peers who hold similar interests and for use with student groups, as relevant to the learning and teaching context.
