Welcome to the August edition of eNews!

Semester 2 has kicked off with the healthy buzz of excited students and staff as they share their various holiday adventures and prepare for another positively challenging learning experience. It is a time to rekindle spirits, embrace old friendships and to plan new collaborations!  The Education Management team has planned a number of events with a focus on expanding the Better Teaching Better Learning agenda in collaboration with colleagues in Malaysia and at Monash University Australia.

In this issue, we bring you news about campus wide programs and events and recommend publications, conferences and education resources to enhance learning and teaching.

What’s new?

Better Teaching Better Learning (BTBL) at Monash Malaysia

The Office of the Vice Provost Learning & Teaching at Monash University Malaysia has provided financial support to further develop and implement the Better Teaching Better Learning agenda on the Malaysian campus. Professor Darrell Evans (Vice Provost Learning & Teaching ) will visit our campus on 13 and 14 August 2015 to hold discussions and share his vision on the implementation of BTBL.

Transforming Assessment Webinar – 5 August

A 3D virtual business simulation for experiential learning in first year accounting
Presenter: A/Prof. Julie Walker (University of Queensland)

This session will describe the 3D virtual business enterprise (VBE)and its use as an experiential learning resource in a large first year accounting course. Over 900 students participated in the VBE in first semester 2015, running businesses in the virtual world and generating financial statements to report on their trading activities. The VBE is a result of a collaboration between the University of Queensland Business School and International Education Services, the original developers of the 3D business world. Hosted by Professor Geoffrey Crisp, Dean Learning and Teaching, RMIT University and Dr Mathew Hillier from the Institute for Teaching and Learning Innovation, University of Queensland, Australia.

The SMART CLASSROOM 9304 is open!

Mr Khoo Boon How’s class (Leadership & Innovation – MON 2801) makes history! This is our first class in the Smart Classroom which opened on 27th July 2015.

  • An Education Technology Task Force will be established with key stakeholder representatives to promote an interactive dialogue on technology enhanced learning and innovative practice.

Education Matters

Learning Skills (LS)

The Learning Skills department offers academic language and learning support for all students of Monash University Malaysia. LS is offering six main programs this semester for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Professional Development Program for Future Graduates and the Higher Degree Research (HDR) Learning Skills Program are two newly developed programs.

  • Academic Skills workshops are conducted to help students develop their academic writing skills.
  • The Learn English for Academic Purposes (LEAP) program is designed for students who wish to develop the language proficiency that is required for academic work.
  • The Professional Development Program for Future Graduates provides students with opportunities to practice essential skills that are required in a competitive workforce.
  • The Higher Degree Research (HDR) Learning Skills Program seminars specifically targets key academic skills needed for postgraduate work.
  • The Multidisciplinary Integrated Skills Program is a collaborative undertaking with Schools and it provides generic skills support to supplement course related assignments.
  • Face to face consultations are open to all students. LS staff do not advise on course content or counseling beyond study skills related matters.
  • Individual consultation sessions for at-risk students are offered through a referral system. Staff may use the link below to refer a student for an individual appointment with a learning skills adviser -

PASS Program

Students can enroll in the PASS program at School level through their School Education Office. The following Schools will implement the PASS Program in Semester 2, 2015. Contact the School Education office for more information.

The eNews monthly newsletter is co-authored by the Education Management team (Purush Karu, Regina Chan, Fadhliyansah Saipul and Fay Patel).

Collaborations is another outcome of the first Education Innovators Forum that Education Management hosted in June, 2014. The forum is a Monash University Malaysia approach to assessing learning and teaching needs across the campus. It is a variation of the World Café and The Art of Conversations that Matter. The event was hosted by the Education Management team in the Campus Education Office to encourage inter-school/department and multidisciplinary conversations about learning and teaching at Monash University Malaysia. Collaborations was the topic of concern for Hassan Yusuf Osman, a founding member of the Education Innovators Forum team.

Participants who attended the event agreed to form an Education Innovators team and to host the forum at the invitation of Schools and departments to facilitate ongoing dialogue about learning and teaching concerns, as required. The Education Innovators Forum Resources are developed by the discussion facilitators of various topics that were identified as critical learning and teaching concerns and dilemmas at the Forum.

Each resource is designed in the form of an easy to read short information brochure on a specific topic. It can be used to facilitate discussion among colleagues and peers who hold similar interests and for use with student groups, as relevant to the learning and teaching context. Team members are Esyin Chew (Senior Lecturer, School of Information Technology), Boon How Khoo (Lecturer, School of Engineering), Adrian Yao Yong Tat (Lecturer, School of Arts and Social Sciences), Hassan Yusuf Osman (Senior Librarian, Library and Learning Commons), Charles Liong (Student, School of Business), Purush Karu (Learning Skills Adviser, Education Management), Regina Chan (Learning Skills Adviser, Education Management), Fadhliyansah Saipul (Program Coordinator), Cheang Kok Soon (Administrative Assistant, Quality & Compliance) and Fay Patel (Director, Education Management).
