In this edition, we announce the generous contribution of Better Teaching Better Learning funds for education research from the Office of the Vice-Provost (Learning and Teaching) at Monash University Australia. This issue includes information on the PASS program, the Smart Classroom Education Technology Training and the next Glocalization of Learning forum in which Ms Adlina Ahmed from the School of Business shares her reflections on her academic journey from a Unit Coordinator to a Chief Examiner.

What’s new?

Better Teaching Better Learning Funds Sponsorship from the OVPLT

We are pleased to announce the AUD$200,000 contribution from the Office of the Vice-Provost (Learning and Teaching) at Monash University Australia to advance the Better Teaching Better Learning agenda at Monash Malaysia. We are working in collaboration with Vice-Provost Darrell Evans to ensure that staff can submit applications for the funds to showcase innovative learning and teaching practices. More information will be made available soon.

2016 OLT Grant Opportunities – Announcement from the Monash Education Academy

The OLT will be accepting applications to the following grant programmes in November 2015:

  • Innovation and Development grants
  • Strategic Priority Commissioned grants

The closing date of the 2016 round is Monday 2 November 2015.
THE MONASH INTERNAL DEADLINE IS MIDNIGHT SUNDAY 11 OCTOBER 2015. LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

Any staff interested in applying for an OLT grant in round 1, 2016, should contact the Monash Education Academy via education.academy@monash.edu to express their interest and arrange a time to discuss their ideas.

Zoomers continue to zoom in…
 
There is an increasing trend of Zoomers zooming in to the campus wide open forums on the Malaysian campus and the BTBL Lunch Box forums on the Monash University Australia campus. Staff are happy to zoom in from the comfort of their offices and remote locations. Participation from Zoomers makes the discussion more interactive, technology integrated and allows for a blended learning experience.
 
Congratulations to our Monash students, Muhammad Karl Mia, Vigneshvaran Sethuraman and Loong Kah Yen, who are currently competing at the Global Finals of Maybank GO Ahead.
 
Our students have taken the initiative to explore their potential on various fronts and should be recognized as high end achievers as they have the desired attributes required in the all rounded global citizen!

Stakeholder Engagement on Enhancing Learning @ Monash Malaysia
Over the last month we had two informative Glocalization of Learning open forum sessions with representation from all seven Schools. (Read more) Discussions around the multi-campus policy on curriculum design and implementation brought to the forum a rich diversity of perspectives on the topic. Dr Joel Moore (Deputy Head of School for the School of Arts and Social Sciences) shared the success of the School in ensuring that localization of content created an inspiring learning experience. During the forum discussion, the merits of contextualized curriculum design collaborations were highlighted:

  • Greater options for innovative practice
  • Localization of the learning materials providing greater learning impact
  • Exchange of Malaysian perspectives among lecturers and students contributing to better SETU scores
  • Higher student and lecturer satisfaction enhancing the learning experience

Staff appreciated the perspectives shared by the Deputy Heads of Schools (Associate Professor Rajendran Partiban and Dr Shaun Lee) on the subject of integrating SETU feedback in enhancing learning. The SETU feedback forum also gave everyone an opportunity to participate in an interactive session with our colleagues, Isabelle Ling and Kristina Kaulenas, from Monash University Australia.

Education Matters

Learning Skills

Learning Skills classes and workshop sessions are in progress. As of August, Learning Skills conducted academic skills classes and unit integrated sessions in collaboration with some unit instructors in the Schools of Science, Business, Engineering and Pharmacy on referencing styles, academic integrity, essay writing, literature reviews and lab report writing. In addition, Learning Skills also conducted additional sessions on academic English, writing techniques, communication skills and academic integrity. Drop-ins and one on one consultation sessions are popular with students who come with specific requests for assistance and advice. Learning Skills provides additional support to referred students on matters relating to class assignments, time management and academic skills.

Learning Skills Workshops for HDR Students

In December 2015, Learning Skills will be conducting Higher Degree Research (HDR) Skills Workshop Sessions once a week for three consecutive weeks. The purpose of these workshops is to assist HDR students develop essential skills in three areas of academic research:  Approaches to research, Developing research questions and Writing abstracts and summaries.

This workshop is open to students in the HDR Program and is offered free of charge.  To register, please contact HDR Administration.

Requests for Learning Skills support for Semester 1, 2016

The Learning Skills team is eager to provide more academic skills support to students in other units that have not sought learning skills intervention. For inquiries and requests for LS collaborative support for 2016, please contact learning skills advisers in the library.

PASS Program

The PASS program is now in week five of the semester. The Program has supported twelve units in six Schools (Business, Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Pharmacy and Medicine) and the PASS Coordinator has trained 37 new and three Senior PASS leaders.

Preliminary training for PASS Program Semester 1, 2016
Schools are encouraged to submit Expressions of Interest to implement PASS in Semester 1, 2016. The PASS Coordinator from each school will be invited to attend the Preliminary training session on 3 November 2015.

PASS Peer Review
The PASS peer review exercise will be held from Week 6 to 7 with reviewers from the Unit Coordinator’s team, EM, School PASS coordinators and student leaders randomly selected from past semesters. Members of the PASS peer review panel will evaluate the PASS leader guided by PASS Leader Observation Form and provide constructive feedback to improve the quality of student mentoring.

PASS evaluation for Semester 1, 2015 has been sent to the students for them to determine overall effectiveness in meeting program goals and objectives, and to identify strengths and weaknesses in program implementation and program effectiveness.

The eNews monthly newsletter is co-authored by the Education Management team (Purush Karu, Regina Chan, Fadhliyansah Saipul and Fay Patel).

Collaborations is another outcome of the first Education Innovators Forum that Education Management hosted in June, 2014. The forum is a Monash University Malaysia approach to assessing learning and teaching needs across the campus. It is a variation of the World Café and The Art of Conversations that Matter. The event was hosted by the Education Management team in the Campus Education Office to encourage inter-school/department and multidisciplinary conversations about learning and teaching at Monash University Malaysia. Collaborations was the topic of concern for Hassan Yusuf Osman, a founding member of the Education Innovators Forum team.
Participants who attended the event agreed to form an Education Innovators team and to host the forum at the invitation of Schools and departments to facilitate ongoing dialogue about learning and teaching concerns, as required. The Education Innovators Forum Resources are developed by the discussion facilitators of various topics that were identified as critical learning and teaching concerns and dilemmas at the Forum.

Each resource is designed in the form of an easy to read short information brochure on a specific topic. It can be used to facilitate discussion among colleagues and peers who hold similar interests and for use with student groups, as relevant to the learning and teaching context. Team members are Esyin Chew (Senior Lecturer, School of Information Technology), Boon How Khoo (Lecturer, School of Engineering), Adrian Yao Yong Tat (Lecturer, School of Arts and Social Sciences), Hassan Yusuf Osman (Senior Librarian, Library and Learning Commons), Purush Karu (Learning Skills Adviser, Education Management), Regina Chan (Learning Skills Adviser, Education Management), Fadhliyansah Saipul (Program Coordinator) and Fay Patel (Director, Education Management).
