Personal statement

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wu Ta Yeong received his BEng (Hons), MEng and PhD from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 2001, 2003 and 2009, respectively. Assoc. Prof. Wu is currently a Chemical Engineering lecturer and researcher in the School of Engineering, Monash University Malaysia. He is a Graduate Engineer registered under Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and he has been awarded Chartered Chemical Engineer status and elected to Chartered Membership of Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). His current research interests include sustainable solid waste management, biorefinery, biofuel production, and wastewater treatment. He has published a book, a book chapter and more than 70 articles in ISI-Web of Science journals with Scopus h-index up to 30 and total citations of more than 2500. Among all the articles, 5 highly cited papers received enough citations to be placed in the top 1% of the academic field based on a highly cited threshold for the field and publication year. From 2009 till 2018, Assoc. Prof. Wu managed to secure research funding up to RM 877,500 as a principal investigator. As a main supervisor, Assoc. Prof. Wu has guided 6 PhD students and 2 Master students until completions and presently is supervising 4 Master students. Currently, he is serving as an Associate Editor for “International Journal of Environmental Science and Technology” (Impact factor: 2.037, Springer) as well as Editorial Board Member for “Electronic Journal of Biotechnology” (Impact factor: 1.881, Elsevier), “Journal of Water Process Engineering” (ISI-Web of Science indexed journal) and “International Journal of Recycling of Organic Waste in Agriculture” (Scopus indexed journal, Springer). Also, he is a reviewer for numerous high-impact journals and serving as a Scientific Committee in several international conferences. Due to his recognition in research, Assoc. Prof. Wu was a recipient of several awards such as Malaysia’s Research Star Award 2017, “Excellence in Reviewing” Award for 2017 and Pro Vice-Chancellor Awards.

Research Interests

Assoc. Prof. Wu’s current research revolves around waste management through integration of cleaner production and biorefinery. Biorefinery consists of technologies which enable sustainable biomass conversion to its ingredients and marketable products such as various metabolites, organic fertilizers (compost or vermicompost), biofuels and bioenergy. Biorefinery and biomass will play an increasingly crucial role as we move towards a biobased economy over the coming decades. It is envisaged that Malaysia is a country where an abundance of biomass, especially agricultural solid wastes, could be obtained easily but still underutilized. Therefore, Assoc. Prof. Wu’s research development in this area allows for optimal utilization as well as value creation of biomass found in Malaysia and around the SouthEast Asia regions.

Research Projects

Title: A Way Forward for Solid Waste Management - Biorefinery

Proposed mechanism for the synergistic action of hydroxyl/sulfate radicals and inorganic salt during the pretreatment of oil palm fronds

High reliance on crude oil for energy consumption results in the urgent need to explore and develop alternative renewable sources. One of the most promising routes which garners attention worldwide is biorefinery. The biorefinery concept has an analogy with today’s petroleum refinery, but the former transforms biomass into various biofuels and value-added bioproducts. However, the efficient transformation is usually hindered by the recalcitrant structure of the biomass. Thus, many pretreatment technologies have been developed to overcome the recalcitrance of lignocellulose such that the components can be re-utilized more efficiently to enhance biorefinery. Our research in School of Engineering is mainly focusing on developing and improving novel methods to transform lignocellulosic solid wastes into value-added bioproducts by incorporating different mechanical, chemical, and biological pretreatments. One of the latest projects involves the development of green solvent in a delignification process. Further investigation is to ensure the economic viability of bioconversion. The projects are funded by FRGS, LRGS and FRGS-MRSA (MOHE) with strong research collaborations with other local and international universities.
