Personal statement

Alpha Agape is a Senior Lecturer and and the Course Coordinator of the Mechatronics Discipline in the School of Engineering in School of Engineering, Monash University Malaysia. His research interests are in instrumentation and the design of intelligent/ autonomous systems particularly for the use of clinical/ sports biomechanics for early detection of physical injuries affecting posture and gait, both of which are key ingredients for acts of daily living. He has been successful in obtaining several external research grants to fund his research interests/area, from government agencies and industries.

Alpha also serves in various leadership capacities within IEEE Malaysia Section. He is currently the Student Activities Chair for IEEE Malaysia Section and the Chair of IEEE Engineering in Medicine & Biology Society, Malaysia Chapter.

Research Interests

My research interests and strengths are in instrumentation and the design of intelligent/ autonomous systems particularly for the use of clinical/ sports biomechanics for early detection of common physical injuries. The use of embedded systems are essential in arriving at a solutions for this research area. Besides that, I am also actively involved in related research areas such as motion analysis, rehabilitation engineering, biomechanics, body sensor networks, artificial intelligence, and sports biomechanics.

Research projects

Title: Design & Development of a Wavelet Neural Network Architecture for Wearable Systems to Predict Kinematic Gait Parameters and Identify Pathological Gait

This work proposes a gait estimation model to estimate kinematic gait parameters of lower limbs and joints. This model is based on the ANN architecture and trained to rely on a minimal number of measured foot kinetic parameter. ANNs predictive ability is used to reduce the number of sensor systems employed in traditional gait estimation methods, by just using only foot insoles to predict complete lower limb kinematic information. Wearable kinetic foot sensors are comparatively cost effective, eliminates the constraints caused by force plates and offers the advantage of data recording outside laboratory. In addition, no research has yet been performed on ANN based lower limb kinematic estimations from foot kinetic data. Hence, the proposed research will set a future trend for daily gait monitoring through estimating complete kinematic information of lower limb with the aid of foot insoles. The project is expected to impact the healthcare industry by developing applications for monitoring developmental gait disorder, gait disease state, and physical/sports performance. Furthermore, such systems would also be able to serve as a device for early detection/intervention for gait abnormalities such as Parkinson Disease and Cerebral Palsy.

Title: Design and Implementation of an Assistive Neuroprosthesis for Gait Rehabilitation

Muscle denervation is one of the most prominent causes of skeletal muscle atrophy. A condition which results in loss of myofibrils over a short period of time. The devastating side effect of muscle atrophy is the gradual change of muscle fibers into a scar like tissue called, fibrosis with no functionality. For this reason, several rehabilitation methods are utilized to mitigate the effect of muscle atrophy to a certain extend. According to the literature, electrical stimulation of muscle fibers has demonstrated a promising result in terms of muscle mass gain. However, fast onset of fatigue inhibits efficient rehabilitation. To overcome the aforementioned problem, an assistive mechanism was proposed to complement the electrical stimulator by providing the extra assistance required for task completion. It is expected that integration of the two systems is able to prolong fatigue and consequently facilitate rehabilitation.

Title: Monitoring and Improving Human Postural Control for Acts of Daily Living

Balance is an important part of everyday life, essential for carrying out Activities of Daily Living (ADL) required for maintaining the quality of life (QoL). Factors like advancing age, injuries, or diseases can impact an individual’s ability to balance as a result of losses/degradation in the somatosensory system. In recent years white noise has been seen to potentially minimize losses in the function of the somatosensory system while improving balance. We hypothesize that the use of different types of noise could further enhance the potential benefits of introducing noise. Preliminary findings are promising, indicating improvements in sway parameters during when investigated over a range of noise spectrum, delivered to subjects as sub-threshold mechanical noise. Passive and active balance trials have been designed to assess the effects these noise spectrums in different balance conditions. Possible applications of this research include applications in assistive technology to minimize risk of falls among the elderly and disabled.
