Personal statement

Dr. Chiew graduated from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, with a Bachelor of Engineering Mechanical-Automotive and a Masters of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering. He obtained his PhD at the University of Canterbury (UC), New Zealand investigating into model-based mechanical ventilation for patients with respiratory failure. After graduation, he works as a postdoctoral fellow at Centre for Bioengineering at UC, in a range of research including leadership of a large randomized controlled trial. He is currently a lecturer in Monash University Malaysia, pioneering model-based clinical mechanical ventilation trial in a local hospital as well as hospital in Singapore. His work spans from the development of physiological models, model development, algorithm and system identification methods, and the creation of unique clinical decision metrics, to conducting clinical and animal trials.

Research Projects

Title: Model-based Biomedical Engineering research: Mechanical ventilation

Patients with respiratory failure are admitted to the hospital for mechanical breathing support. These patients are often critically ill and can have high mortality rate of up to 60%. In addition, MV treatment per patient day can cost up to RM6000. Thus, a well-managed MV support can have significant social and economic impact towards the society. MV is the primary treatment for these patients but research in MV is still lacking, with little standardisation and guideline. In particular, patients’ condition and their response to treatment are heterogeneous and variable over time. Thus, general treatment approaches may not be suitable for many.

A more optimal, individualised approach is needed to obtain better care and outcomes. This research focuses on model0based treatment that offers the opportunity to personalise MV treatment. Mathematical models and decision making systems are developed to characterise patients’ condition. These models and systems are then used to derive an optimised care based on patient-specific response. Figure below shows how a mode based system (CURE Soft) is used to help clinicians to set MV treatment for the patient. We also specialised in other biomedical engineering research, taking conceptual and model-based approaches to clinical proof of concept, and finally to implementation in clinical trial.
