Personal statement

Dr. Irene received her BEng degree from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and PhD degree in University of Nottingham, Malaysia. Her PhD research revolved in the area of process integration for resource conservation. She is using advanced mathematical modelling tools such as GAMS and LINGO to perform process system optimization. Her latest work is to apply artificial neural network into data-driven process optimization.  Dr. Irene is currently supervising two PhD. students and one Master student. The projects are funded by Monash scholarship and Ministry of Higher Education.

Research Interests

Due to the enforcement of environmental regulatory rules and increasing electricity prices, waste heat recovery refrigeration system is gaining widespread attention in reducing the dependency on electricity-driven refrigeration system. Nevertheless, its application in industrial operation is subjected to various challenges in both technical and cost aspects. In that, different modelling approaches are adopted to overcome these challenges. These include the mathematical modelling and superstructure optimization for technology selection and economic analysis, monte-carlo analysis for uncertainty modelling, and artificial neural network for data-driven predictive modelling.

Research Projects

Title: Systematic Design Framework for biomass combined heat & power value chain

Syngas and biogas derived from biomass can be converted into power via power generation units, such as gas engines, gas turbines and micro-turbines. There are many alternatives to design a biomass combined heat and power (CHP) system. Although having a non- exhaustive list of alternatives is beneficial; however, it is a challenge to design an optimal system which is the main focus of this project.

Title: Synthesis of Nanocrystalline Cellulose Pickering Emulsion

Cellulose, a linear homo-polysaccharide of β-D-glucopyranose linked by 1, 4-glycosidic bonds, was first discovered by Payen in 18’s century on the composition of wood. In its nano-dimension, nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) shows unique characteristics such as high surface area, high crystallinity and a Young’s modulus (~105 – 168 GPa) comparable to copper and titanium. Our work exploits empty fruit bunch (EFB), an excessive supply biomass resulted from the palm oil extraction process as the raw material of NCC. The extracted NCC was then adopted as the stabilizer for Pickering emulsion.

Title: Process Synthesis and LCA of Cellulosic biorefinery

Nanocellulose material which include nanocrystalline cellulose, cellulose nanofiber, as well as its byproduct such has lignin and hemicellulose can be obtained from biomass. The conventional nanocellulose material synthesis route in laboratory scale consumes high amount of water and energy. The laboratory setup is also very much a batch process to ensure the final product meet its desired purity and properties. This project adopt process design and resource integration approaches to model a cost effective cellulosic biorefinery produces cellulose, hemicellulose and sugar which can be further processed to nanocellulose (NC), nano lignin particles (NLP), etc. Chemical process life cycle assessment and scale up framework will be developed mathematical optimization software to design a sustainable cellulosic biorefinery.
