Personal statement

Joanne Mun-Yee Lim received her Bachelor of Engineering (with honours) from Monash University in 2008, her Master of Engineering Degree from University Malaya in 2011, and her PhD (Engineering) from Multimedia University in 2016. She is also a member of The Institution of Engineers Malaysia and a Professional Engineer with Practicing Certificate (PEPC) of the Board of Engineers Malaysia. She joined the Department of Electrical Engineering in Asia Pacific University as a Lecturer in 2011. She is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, School of Engineering, Monash University Malaysia. Her research interest includes Internet of Things (IoT),  Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV/Drones),  Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET), Artificial intelligence, Machine Learning, Optimization schemes, Robotics design, Renewable and Sustainable Systems. Her research focuses on Internet of Things, communication system, machine learning and transportation. Her research also focuses on how the application of machine learning with Internet of Things in the field of vehicular system and unmanned aerial vehicle (drones) could improve quality of life. She has been actively looking at various ways to improving the quality of transportation using technologies. She has worked with many different industries to date and has been the chief investigator in many different IoT/Transportation/UAV research grants and projects.

Title: Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)/Vehicular AdHoc Network (VANET)/Traffic Management/Vehicular System Technologies

Vehicular Systems Technologies Real Time Simulation Scenario

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)/Vehicular AdHoc Network (VANET)/Traffic Management systems provides safety and comfort applications with the aim of improving driving safety and traffic management through monitoring using wireless communication . Our research focuses on incorporating Internet of Vehicles (IoV) with traffic monitoring and planning system to ensure critical messages are disseminated to drivers on time, so that necessary precautions can be taken to avoid accidents and to improve traffic planning and mangament using Intelligent Transportation Systems.  VANET/ ITS/ IoV/Traffic management systems can also be used for cooperative lane change warning, road internet access and improved navigation. In order to ensure adaptiveness of IoV/ITS/VANET/Traffic management and planning, our research focuses on developing Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning/Optimization systems. Renewable energy can be used to harvest waste energy generated by a moving cars to power up VANET devices, with the aim to ensure low fuel consumption. Currently we are working with automobile, traffic management partners and Internet of Things (IoT) industries to develop future technologies for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)

Title: Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) / Drones/Flying AdHoc Network

Flying AdHoc Network (FANET)

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), also commonly known as drones, have been used in various industries for different applications. These tasks are mainly performed in areas that are difficult for humans to reach, such as surveillance of large agricultural area, wide-area search operations, and delivery of supplies and parcels. The small size, high speed and remote control abilities of drones give them the advantage over helicopters and small airplane to perform such tasks. Our research focuses on designing drones capable of flying autonomously,  carrying load and path finding with communication established between drones. The efficiency of drones communications and flight path finding with potential failures are evaluated to enable drones to perform with IoT in applications such as transportation, remote area, agriculture, monitoring, surveillance and tracking.

Internet of Things (IoT)

Internet of Things (IoT) allow multiple technologies to connect and exchange data for home automation, transportation, agriculture, monitoring, surveillance etc. Internet of Things is one of the pillars of Industry 4.0. There are many technologies that enable Internet of Things. To ensure efficiency in data processing, communication between devices, interoperability and sustainability, our research focuses on integration of edge devices with Internet of Things communication and data analytics with machine learning for applications such as smart home, smart transportation, smart agriculture, efficient power regularization, object tracking, surveillance and monitoring systems.
