Development of optical range gated imaging system for accurate three-dimensional (3D) object modelling

This research will investigate the effects of illumination and reflectivity in laser optics, and saturation in absolute range calculation for range gated system. All these factors contribute to the image contrast and quality, and accordingly impact the range accuracy for the 3D imaging system.

This research is expected to bring a novelty into 3D imaging, where a more accurate model will be developed for the reflected pulse profile, new findings will also introduce to compensate the effects of reflectivity and saturation.

Upon successful completion of the project, a new, fast and accurate 3D optical reconstruction system using the optical range gated approach will be developed with focus on high end application such as medical implant modelling, reverse engineering and object recognition.
