Profile Summary

Associate Professor Sharifah Syed Hassan is a molecular virologist at the Infectious Disease Laboratory of the JCSMHS, Monash University Malaysia (MUM). She was the former director of research for the Department of Veterinary Services, Ministry of Agriculture, where, she later joined MUM in 2008. She is currently the Head of the Infection and Immunity Cluster of the Tropical Medicine and Biology Platform of MUM.  Her current interests are on host-pathogens interaction especially involving Flavivirus infections. Her group has developed and established Aedes aegypti and albopictus midgut cDNA library for use in host-viral interaction studies. With her expertise in recombinant DNA technology, she has also developed a recombinant Lactococcus-surface displayed multiple-influenza antigens vaccine against influenza. Currently, her group at MUM has also completed two longitudinal community-based studies on dengue viral infections in collaborations with the Ministry of Health offices of Shah Alam and Segamat. Assoc Prof Sharifah Syed Hassan holds a degree in Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, UPM. She also holds a PhD in virology from University of Oxford, UK and MSc in Veterinary Microbiology from the University of Surrey, UK.
