Whether you are a returning student or a new member of the Monash Malaysia community, I hope you have had a restful holiday and welcome you warmly to the Library and Learning Commons.

This first big news I wish to share relates to the Library pilot project on improved spaces and extended hours that will commence on 29 July 2019. In a continued effort to enhance the on-campus student experience, and following a series of consultations with campus stakeholders and student associations in May, I am pleased to announce that the Library will conduct a trial run of its extended opening hours and access to learning spaces from 29 July 2019 until 29 November 2019.

Upon closing of the service desks and professional services provided by Library staff, specific sections of the Learning Commons (Level 1) and of the Library’s expansion (Level 3) will remain open as follows:


  • 10:00 pm to 12:00 am (regular semester)
  • 10:00 pm to 03:00 am (SWOT VAC)


  • 06:00 pm to 10:00 pm (regular semester)
  • 06:00 pm to 03:00 am (SWOT VAC)

The Library will provide 540 seats “after hours”, representing a 92% increase from the seating capacity available during previous SWOT VACs.

The following areas will be closed at 10:00 pm on weekdays or 06:00 pm on weekends:

  • LLC Training Room (teaching space)
  • Level 2 and Level 3 Main areas (MUM collections)

To make the pilot project a success, the Library worked closely with MUM Facilities Management (FMD) and Security Departments to provide the necessary support and safety of Monash students after working hours.  The collaboration with Mr. Sammugam’s Security team has been critical in the implementation phase, without which this initiative would not be possible.  One Security staff will be stationed at Level 1 while another Security staff will patrol the library expansion area and Create/Engage rooms on an hourly basis. Additional CCTV cameras have been placed at Level 1 for your security.

Library staff on duty will make three different announcements via the P.A. system 30 minutes and 15 minutes before, and at closing time respectively. All users will be required to check out the library books at least 15 minutes before the service desks close.  After the closing of the service desks, borrowing of books will not be permitted.

Your attention to the P.A. announcements and your cooperation in relocating to the designated library spaces will be critical to successfully transform into a permanent arrangement in 2020. The pilot project will be evaluated in December 2019, where usage data and recommendations to maintain or to discontinue the initiative will be made to the PVC for further consideration. I sincerely hope that the increased provision of spaces and hours will contribute positively to your academic journey at Monash.

You will also notice a number of physical improvements within the Library. Most notably, the refurbishment of the Library Seminar Room into an active learning classroom is now complete. It will be launched at the beginning of the semester for use by Library staff to deliver their classes and workshops. You will be able to experience this innovative facility as you sign up for the programs offered by the team of Liaisons and Learning Skills Advisors.
