Communication skills challenged!

Originating from Queensland, the Three Minute Thesis cultivates students’ academic, presentation and research communication skills. Instead of spending hours explaining their thesis, Higher Degree Research (HDR) students are given only three minutes to deliver the significance of their research work to a non-specialist audience.

Not only are students challenged to share their ideas and discoveries in a single static PowerPoint slide, no props and electronic media are allowed during their presentations. Those who exceed the stipulated time frame of three minutes are immediately disqualified.

“This is going to be the most important event for our graduates in terms of showcasing and communicating their thesis with just one slide, in three minutes. Five contenders from different schools will be showing us how communication is done at its best today,” said Professor of Biochemistry and Head of Biomedical Sciences, Dr Iekhsan bin Othman, from the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences during his welcoming speech.

Felicia Lim Phei Lin from the School of Pharmacy clinched first place with her simple, yet engaging explanation on the magic behind microwave chemistry. Lim will go on to represent Monash Malaysia at the Monash  University  3MT  final  in Australia on 10 August 2017, for the opportunity to compete in the Trans-Tasman 3MT final at the University of Queensland on 29 September 2017.

Coming in second with her research on oil palms was Carrie Sim Siew Fang from the School of Science. Wong Zhi Hoong from the School of Arts and Social Sciences came in third with his oration on environmental protection and indigenous people’s empowerment. Wong also won The People’s  Choice  award  for his captivating charisma on stage.

The judging panel included Professor Andrew Walker, President and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Interim) Monash University Malaysia; Dr Mahaletchumy Arujanan, Executive Director, Malaysian Biotechnology Information Centre (MABIC); and Janice Wong, Director of Human Resources, Monash University Malaysia.
