Every hard work gets rewarded! High achieving students from the School of Pharmacy were recognised at the recent AbbVie Young Leaders Scholarship 2014 ceremony. AbbVie, an international research-based biopharmaceuticul company awarded top students in each cohort, with scholarships worth RM40,000 in total.
“Through this long-standing partnership with AbbVie, we hope to build a cadre of leaders amongst our Pharmacy students, leaders that will really make a difference to the future of patient care in Malaysia and beyond,” shared Professor Helen Bartlett, President and Pro-Vice Chancellor of Monash University Malaysia, during her welcome note.
Echoing similar sentiments was Muru Annamalai, the Regional General Manager of AbbVie Malaysia. “The healthcare landscape is one which involves constant change. Likewise, healthcare professionals who are hungry to improve the quality of life of patients, who wants to work towards eradicating diseases and illnesses are essential. We are looking for people like that to join us,” he said.
Chin Weng Khong, Ku Chai Yee and Lui Mei Yi, the top three final year Pharmacy students were given the opportunity to share a brief presentation on the topic of ‘Partnership between healthcare industry and an academic institution: What are we expecting, and how do we achieve a win-win situation?’. Lui Mei Yi impressed the judges with her keen grasp of the industry and was awarded with a cash prize of RM5,000 and a 2-month AbbVie internship.
When asked about the secret behind her academic success, Lui Mei Yi said, “I think the most beneficial advice I received is to begin with the end in mind. Always set a goal at the beginning and whatever you do, work towards that goal.”
“We are most grateful to AbbVie, whose generosity has enabled us to reward our most deserving students,” said Professor Kenneth Lee, Head of the School of Pharmacy in his thank you speech. Giving special thanks to Muru Annamalai, he said, “Thank you for being one of our most enthusiastic patrons since the very beginning of our partnership. We look forward to many more years of working together.”
Congratulations to all students.
