Program Details
Synopsis
This team-taught intensive unit provides an overview of the salient features constituting contemporary Malaysian society. It also provides a critical understanding of some of the significant innovations, dilemmas, and challenges unfolding in Malaysia in relation to regional and global trends.
Topics covered include domestic politics; economics, social policy & development; literature & the arts; and international relations & security.
Outcomes
On successful completion of the unit, students should be able to:
- articulate the salient socio-cultural, economic and political features of contemporary Malaysian society;
- analyse some of the significant innovations, dilemmas and challenges unfolding in Malaysia;
- evaluate the above issues and debates in the context of regional and global trends;
- communicate research findings conducted in collaboration with peers via a variety of formats (oral, video, pictures, etc.).
Teaching activity
This intensive unit is team-taught. It is delivered through lectures (Week 1), seminars (Week 2), and a 10-days field trip (Weeks 3 & 4).
In lectures, students are introduced to key concepts and issues based on the prescribed readings. In some cases, the lectures comprise talks provided by experts.
In seminars, students deliver group presentations based on the set readings and discussion questions. These presentations (power-point and/or videos) may be also posted online for peer review.
A field trip is conducted to consolidate a grounded understanding of some of the issues discussed in lectures and seminars.
Assessment regime
- Online quiz valued at 20% (Week 1)
- Seminar group presentations valued at 20% (Week 2)
- One essay (max 2,500 words) valued at 30% (Due 6 August 2021)
- Field trip report (max 2,500 words) valued 30% (Due 6 August 2021)
Students are expected to attend lectures and seminars. Attendance follows the Faculty requirement of at least 75% of lectures and seminars in lieu of which a penalty of 20% deduction of the final mark will be exercised.
Attendance for the field trip is compulsory. In addition to tuition fees, students are required to pay an additional program fee (direct costs).
The field trip to Sabah begins and ends in Kuala Lumpur. You will not be allowed to stay longer in Sabah.

Total Program Fee: RM 2,800
This unit has a program fee to cover the direct costs of student travel. However, all successful applicants will be eligible for full travel grant from the School of Arts and Social Sciences. Terms and condition apply.

Due to limited places, there will be a selection process, If selected, you will be invited to follow through the rest of the application. You will know no later than Friday, 2 April, 2021.

Notes:
(1) Where program fees are paid to an external travel service provider, the cancellation and refund policy of the travel service provider will be applied instead of the School’s Refund Procedure.
(2) The Program Start Date is defined as the ‘Teaching Period Start Date’ for the unit as indicated on the Census Dates and Teaching Periods 2021 webpage.
Enrolment Process:
- Ensure that you meet the AMU2685 unit prerequisites at the time of application. (Note: International students must have a student pass and passport that is valid for at least 6 months from June 2021 onwards)
- Request for a course progression/course map check with the Course Management Office (Arts) at least 2 weeks before the application due date. Application closes on Friday, 26 March 2021.
- If you are eligible to take this unit the CMO will inform you to submit the Registration Form (Expression of Interest) to Dr Yeoh. Refer to the instructions above on ‘How to Apply’.
- You will receive an email from the School informing you the outcome of your application latest by Friday, 2 April 2021.
- If your application is successful then you may proceed to enrol:
i) Please generate an invoice from the fee calculator.
ii) Pay tuition fees at the Finance counter and submit the original receipt as proof of tuition fee payment to the CMO. If payment was made through internet banking then please send a screen shot of the successful transaction to mum.sasscmo@monash.edu.
iii) Enrolment is done manually by the CMO and the process will begin from 3 April - 30 April 2021.
Unit Cancellation
Every effort will be made to ensure that the unit offered will be run; however the unit may be cancelled up to one week prior to the commencement of the Winter Semester if the enrolment is low or due to unforeseen circumstances. If a unit is cancelled, all students enrolled will be advised in writing prior to the commencement of the Winter Semester. In addition, all students will be automatically withdrawn from that unit.
