AMU2690 Discovering the Asia-Pacific Study Trips (Summer A, 2020)

  • 48 credit points of first year Arts units study in Monash Malaysia or its equivalent (by 23 October, 2020).
  • Students must be enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences (A2006) or Bachelor of Communication and Media Studies (A2007) or Bachelor of Digital Media and Communication (A2011) to undertake this unit.

Note: Not open to exchange students.


For 2020, the destination is the mountainous Cordillera region of northern Philippines. The Cordillera region is the home of many different and diverse groups of indigenous peoples collectively called “Igorots” (“highlanders”). This study trip provides an opportunity to learn more about their history, cultural beliefs and practices, and everyday concerns.

Program Details

This unit provides learning opportunities for students to become experientially and intellectually literate with the varied contemporary social, cultural, political, economic, and environmental realities of various countries in the Asia Pacific region.

The specific focus for the study trip will vary each year. Among others, they will cover topics in environment and human development; everyday identities and identity politics; media and popular culture; and democracy and social movements.  The overall pedagogical stress is on critically mapping and understanding various kinds of social transformations in the Asia Pacific region.

Each year, one country will form the focus of study.

The unit comprises:-

  1. the submission of pre-study trip annotated bibliography and the attendance of orientation and preparatory lectures;
  2. lectures, talks and immersion activities facilitated by various universities, civil society groups, and local communities during the study trip;
  3. the submission of a post-study trip portfolio and reflective report.

Upon completion of the unit, students will be able to:-

  1. recognise and explain the key socio-cultural, economic, political, developmental and environmental challenges facing the country/countries visited in relation to the wider Asia-Pacific region;
  2. evaluate a range of social responses to these challenges in the Asia-Pacific region;
  3. critically reflect on the application of their theoretical knowledge to real-world issues;
  4. communicate effectively in both written, digital and oral formats;
  5. work collaboratively;
  6. identify and utilise skills in intercultural competency.

All successful applicants are required to be in Kuala Lumpur by Thursday, 19 November 2020 for the pre-study trip preparatory lectures and orientation. The study trip begins and ends in Kuala Lumpur. You will not be allowed to extend your stay in the destination country.

Assessment Regime

  1. Pre-study trip essay: Students submit an annotated bibliography (1,500 words; 20%) of between 8-10 readings pertaining to background country information and key topics to be covered about 2 weeks before the study trip (Due 6 November 2020).
  2. Study trip proper: Students keep a study trip journal documenting in detail various aspects of the trip. They can include photos, videos, conversations, talks, lectures, personal observations, tourist brochures, maps etc.
  3. Post-study trip assessments: Students work in teams/groups to produce a portfolio worth about 50% (E-magazine/video documentary/collective blog) about the study trip in the format/genre of a young traveller sharing their experiences to a general audience in an accessible, engaging and ethical manner. Students also submit a longer report worth 30% (max 3,000 words) which is a critical reflection of the materials drawn from their journals and pre-study trip preparations. (Both due 9 January 2021)

Download and submit your expression of interest and application form to: by GMT 1700 (Malaysian time), Thursday, 30 April 2020.

Due to limited places, there will be a selection process based on the expression-of-interest form. The results will be made known no later than Friday, 8 May 2020.

(1) Where program fees are paid to an external travel service provider, the cancellation and refund policy of the travel service provider will be applied instead of the School’s Refund Procedure.

(2) The Program Start Date is defined as the ‘Teaching Period Start Date’ for the unit as indicated on the Census Dates and Teaching Periods 2020 webpage.

Enrolment Process:

  1. Ensure that you meet the AMU2690 unit prerequisites at the time of application.
  2. Request for a course progression/course map check with the Course Management Office (Arts) at least 2 weeks before the application due date. Application is closed on Thursday, 30 April 2020. Kindly upload your course map via this E-course map submission box for Arts short term mobility program.
  3. If you are eligible to take this unit the CMO will inform you to submit the Registration Form (Expression of Interest) to Dr Yeoh. Refer to the instructions above on ‘How to Apply’.
  4. You will receive an email from the School informing you the outcome of your application latest by Friday, 8 May 2020.
  5. If your application is successful then you may proceed to enrol:
    1. Please generate an invoice from the fee calculator.
    2. Pay tuition fees at the Finance counter and submit the original receipt as proof of tuition fee payment to the CMO. If payment was made through internet banking then please send a screen shot of the successful transaction to
    3. Enrolment is done manually by the CMO and the process will begin from 8 - 29 May 2020.
  6. The unit will be added to your enrolment within 2 working days after the tuition fee payment receipt is received. Thereafter please login WES to check your enrolment. Further details on travel arrangements will be communicated to you in due course.

Unit Cancellation

Every effort will be made to ensure that the unit offered will be run; however the unit may be cancelled up to one week prior to the commencement of the Summer Semester if the enrolment is low or due to unforeseen circumstances.  If a unit is cancelled, all students enrolled will be advised in writing prior to the commencement of the Summer Semester. In addition, all students will be automatically withdrawn from that unit.
