Sunway College JB Pre-University Familiarisation program with Monash Malaysia

Dr Emma Baulch, lecturer in Communications and Media Studies, conducted a workshop for 30 students from Sunway College Johor Baru on 9 August 2019. The cohort comprised of students doing their A-Levels or MUFY, and the first half of the workshop guided them through the program of study available at the School of Arts and Social Sciences (SASS). The students were also taken through the method of study at SASS, where active learning is prioritised over a passive, unidirectional teaching structure. Many of the students were already familiar with an active learning process and provided their own insights to the session.

During the second half of the workshop, Dr Emma guided the students through a poster making activity in relation to the Monash Change It! campaign. Divided into groups of six, the students had to design an advertisement showcasing a social issue, and come up with a tagline in order to effectively advertise Monash University Malaysia to a local audience.

The students used PowerPoint to create their advertisements and came up with various resourceful and creative posters, covering a diverse range of social issues from mental health awareness to gun violence. Each group had a strong rationale behind their choice and their final product, making for a highly interactive and fruitful session.
