Who we are
Scientific knowledge and its applications can provide the solutions to current major world problems: environmental degradation, pollution, resource depletion, climate change, waste disposal, infectious diseases and overpopulation. Progress in medical treatments, novel materials, nanotechnology, biotechnology, nutrition, and industrial processes rely on scientific discoveries.
Monash Malaysia’s Science Programs were offered for the first time in July 1998 as part of the School of Engineering and Science located in the grounds of Sunway College. Initially, Monash Malaysia was a teaching-only campus and science degrees were offered in the fields of Biotechnology and Environmental Management. Medical Bioscience was introduced in 2003, Food Science and Technology was introduced in 2007 and subsequently the BSc was introduced in 2011 with a variety of specialisations in:

- Applied Biochemistry

The Bachelor of Medical Bioscience and Bachelor of Food Science and Technology were introduced in 2015.
Our courses have a strong regional focus, but are globally relevant. Many of our units are identical to those offered at the Clayton campus, Melbourne Australia, and are discipline areas where there is strong demand for high quality graduates in Malaysia, the region and beyond.
We are one of six Schools in Monash’s Faculty of Science.
Students who study science may complete the entire degree program on our world class campus in Malaysia. We also encourage our students to gain international exposure by spending a semester as an exchange student at our Clayton Campus or another international partner university in the course of their degree.
In 2005, our School began developing a strong research program. Our first PhD student graduated in 2009, and since then the numbers of MSc and PhD candidates have continued to grow strongly. We added a research year to our undergraduate degrees in 2001 – the Honours year – giving our three year degrees a pathway to both masters (MSc) and doctoral (PhD) degrees.
In September 2007, the University opened its new RM200 million campus, with dedicated space for Science in its main building. A new building was recently constructed to service an ever-expanding School of Science, with new, well equipped laboratories and teaching spaces and the school relocate to this building in 2014.
The School has more than 500 undergraduate students and 60 higher degree by research (HDR) candidates. Local students comprise about 80% of the Science student population. We have a dynamic cohort of experienced full-time academic staff, with 100% holding a PhD awarded by an internationally recognized university. Approximately 25% of the academic staff are expatriates, providing an international experience beyond many institutions.
Monash Malaysia’s School of Science has a strong desire to make a positive difference. We make an impact, both locally and internationally. We do this both in the classroom, but also in the field – providing our students with a deeper learning experience through field trips, placements and internships.
