PhD studentship (Dr. Kumaran Narayanan) (2)

Project Title: E. coli vector for gene delivery into mammalian cells.

Description of the project:

E. coli is the standard tool in molecular biology for manipulating, maintaining and propagating DNA, including its use as the host for human genomic libraries. This raises the exciting possibility of combining the great utility of E. coli as a cloning vehicle with its ability to deliver DNA, resulting in a potentially extremely powerful vector system for gene expression in mammalian cells. We have adapted a nonpathogenic E. coli strain to successfully deliver plasmids and artificial chromosomes of up to 200 kb into mammalian cells (Narayanan et al., 2013; Chen et al., 2014; Narayanan and Warburton, 2003). This PhD project will advance the development of this vector to optimize it for gene delivery into various mammalian cell types.
