1. What/who influenced your decision in choosing SCI3990?

I chose SCl3990 because I want to pursue Honours after I have completed my degree. I have asked for advice from lecturers and they have informed me that choosing SCl3990 would be a great platform for me to develop practical skills which would prove the usefulness in Honours.

2. Please describe your experience with SCI3990 (please include comments on supervisor, facilities, and life on campus).

SCl3990 was entirely different from all the units that I have taken throughout my university life. In comparison to other units whereby the core part comprises attending lectures, and studying for exam, this unit is completely different in the sense that I am more involved within the research field and practical part of science. Unlike lectures whereby lecturers are the ones who have to plan and give lectures, in this unit I am the one who have to plan ahead on what I want to do each day before going to the laboratory. Besides, in traditional units whereby students only need to conduct the experiment which lasts only two to three hours, I am to conduct an experiment which spans approximately 12 weeks. I have to keep track of all the data that I have accumulated since the first week of experiment and learn to troubleshoot when experiments have gone wrong and repeat them.

3. What qualities did you acquire after completing SCI3990?

I have learned to keep track of my data and plan my experiment besides learning to read up extensively on my topic from many different sources.

4. Would you encourage other current students to enrol into SCI3990? Why?

Yes, I would strongly recommend other current students to enrol into SCl3990 but I would recommend them to take during summer. This would allow them more time to repeat their experiment if anything goes wrong or if they need to read up more extensively. Besides, this unit has given me a glimpse as to whether I really like research, how Honours really is and whether I would like to pursue it. Besides, it also allows students to determine which field really interests them and gain the practical skills needed if they would like to pursue research in the future.

5. lf there is any area in SCI3990 which you think can be improved, what would it be?

I think one area that could be improved would be to put the date for the submission of thesis before the presentation as it would allow us to fully understand the whole experiment and the details besides giving us time to extract the important part of the experiment for the presentation.

1. What/who influenced your decision in choosing SCI3990?

Friends who have done the unit before. Also, I was interested in trying out research.

2. Please describe your experience with SCl3990 (please include comments on supervisor, facilities, and life on campus).

Hectic and frustrating. My supervisor (Dr Joash Tan) was very kind and helpful, but also does not spoon-feed me, and encourage me to learn from my mistakes and move forward despite the many obstacles and challenges I've faced with my research (failed results, no results). His unflinching attitude in tackling these setbacks were admiring. Furthermore, he encouraged to try new topics (when the opportunity arises) and deviate from the common, usual pathways. The facilities were satisfactory, though it would be great if some equipment were more readily available.

3. What qualities did you acquire after completing SCI3990?

I learnt to be more patient, and not to give up easily when faced with setbacks. To keep pushing forward and continue trying, even if it kept yielding results that were not desired, as we can learn from the negative results and try to improve on the methods/procedures.

4. Would you encourage other current students to enrol into SCI3990? Why?

Yes. This unit gave me a new outlook when doing research. First I thought that nothing would go wrong and it would be smooth all the way. However, I still obtained undesired results. This unit can teach future students the hard work in research and the satisfaction of obtaining results from trial and error, and allow students an insight on what it means to do research, where anything can go wrong, but the important fact is to keep moving forward.

1. What/who influenced your decision in choosing SCI3990?

The unit provides the opportunity to apply skills and knowledge obtained during the degree, and was highly recommended by the academic staff.

2. Please describe your experience with SCI3990 (please include comments on supervisor, facilities, and life on campus).

My summer SCl3990 experience was highly educational as I managed to put the skills and knowledge obtained during the degree into practice, as well as to acquire a more comprehensive understanding of research and different fields of study. Taking the unit in summer allowed me to spend long hours in lab and work on my research without having to worry about much else. This priceless experience was made possible by the guidance and contentious effort from my supervisor Prof. Sadeq, as well as the graduate students who do not hesitate to help. The facilities were mostly adequate for the purposes of this unit.

3. What qualities did you acquire after completing SCI3990?

SCl3990 challenged my critical thinking and practical skills, and helped me develop more comprehensive research skills. This unit also granted the chance to acquaint myself with a field of studies I only had a general understanding about.

4. Would you encourage other current students to enrol into SCI3990? Why?

I would, as the unit offers the chance to practice a range of skills and improve before the end of the degree.

5. If there is any area in SCI3990 which you think can be improved, what would it be?

Allowing the students to use the facilities for longer hours.
