PhD Studentship (Dr. Michelle Yap Khai Khun)

PhD Scholarship Opportunity:

Monash-Industry Palm Oil Research Platform (MIPO) is pleased to be offering a fullscholarship for a Ph.D. project that addresses one the key challenges facing the palm oil industry. Self-motivated individual with excellent analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills are highly encouraged to apply.

Abstract:

Palm oil is the most produced and affordable vegetable oil in the world. It feeds billions of npeople globally, especially those from the developing world. Therefore, palm oil is essential for ensuring global food security. Recently, the presence of process contaminants, esterified monochloropropanediol (2-,3-MCPD) and esterified glycidol compounds (GEs), in processed food products have raised much concerns internationally because they have been identified as possible carcinogens. These compounds have also been found in palm-based products because the compounds can be formed during processing, especially in the presence of precursors such as chloride compounds and diacylglycerides at high processing temperature. This project aims to understand the formation of process contaminants and to develop mitigation strategy to reduce, if not eliminate, them during palm oil processing.

Individuals with a Master degree or relevant research experience on top of the minimum admission requirements are strongly encouraged to apply.
